Batman Bad Blood

Article by Gregg Katzman

Despite being a master of stealth, Batman’s no stranger to the spotlight. The Dark Knight has been the focus of several animated features (like the recent Batman vs. Robin and Son of Robin) and understandably so – he is the most popular hero, after all. However, in the latest Batman animated movie, the Caped Crusader steps aside so the rest of the Bat family can receive some extra attention. In Batman: Bad Blood, the iconic hero vanishes after an explosive clash with the imposing villain the Heretic. Yup, this story draws inspiration from Grant Morrison’s work. With Gotham’s protector absent, Nightwing, Robin, Batwoman, Batwing, and Alfred must step up to save the city – and possibly the world – from the latest threat that has emerged from the shadows.

Batwoman Batman Bad Blood

We attended the world premiere of the DC and WB animated film at the Paley Center for Media in New York. Obviously, we won’t give away any spoilers, but we will say the movie is packed with exceptionally entertaining action sequences. Intense and seriously badass melee fights? Check. Heroes – and villains – putting their variety of equipment and weapons to good use? Check. Some major fan service in these fights? One big ol’ check. Really, we wish we could praise one cheerworthy fight sequence, but we don’t want to ruin the awesome surprise. Let’s just say it’s one that’s sure to make fans of the Batman family incredibly happy. In addition to some topnotch action scenes, the animated feature also does a pretty satisfying job juggling its multiple characters – characters who are often overshadowed by Bruce Wayne! The movie doesn’t have the luxury of a long run time (72 minutes), but it’s still able to give Batwoman and Batwing a proper amount of attention while also successfully building up the bigger picture. There may or may not be a hint at the Batman family getting even bigger down the road…
