Face it tiger, you just hit the big screen (again).
According to The Wrap, actress Zendaya is playing the iconic Marvel character Mary Jane Watson in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. Nowadays, casting reveals are almost always going to generate a heated debate online (even though the best course of action is to wait until we at least have some legitimate footage of the person’s performance), but in this case, it’s already causing some very ugly conversations. In the comics, Mary Jane Watson is a Caucasian with red hair, and Zendaya is *gasp* biracial and isn’t a redhead. #NotMyMJ! Is that what truly matters, though? From what I’ve seen, the conversation is focused on ethnicity, but the real question is, can she do Mary Jane Watson’s personality justice?
With a quick Google search, it’s clear the actress can be believable as a beautiful model and actress, so to me, looks aren’t an issue. But again, the character is more than just a good-looking addition to the cast, so does Zendaya have what it takes to believably bring MJ’s strong personality to the film? I haven’t seen any of Zendaya’s work, so I have absolutely no idea, but what I have seen is Marvel Studios’ stellar history of casting choices. Chris Evan’s oozes righteousness as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr. is Iron Man, and, as we saw in Captain America: Civil War, Tom Holland makes for an awesome High School version of Spider-Man. Because of that, I have nothing but faith in the talent Marvel will bring to the big screen. Now what I’m left wondering is whether or not the screenplay brings something fresh to the wall-crawler’s big screen reboot. Fingers crossed, right?
