It’s 2012! With the threat of a Mayan apocalypse looming ahead, we’ve decided to take a look at all the other things to look forward to in 2012! These are comics and comic related things that will make 2012 a year worth not being blown up by Mayans! Let the countdown begin!
12. Amazing Spider-Man Movie!
X-Men: First Class did a terrific job rebooting the X-Men franchise for Fox in 2011, now will Spider-Man do the same in 2012? Andrew Garfield is certainly a capable actor, and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy is a good choice too. The question is, can this movie open a new chapter in Spider-Man’s movie history that will make it’s mark on a new generation? Find out on July 3rd! You can RIIIIISE ABOOOOOOVE!!
11. Winter Soldier!
Fear Itself writer (and friend of the blog) Matt Fraction sure pulled a fast one on us. He supposedly killed Bucky Barnes (aka Winter Soldier aka Captain America) in Fear Itself, only for it to turn out that he survived! He even talked about Bucky’s Death with us! All’s forgiven Matt, because Ed Brubaker is taking Bucky back to his Winter Soldier identity, this time to go after former colleagues and proteges! Bucky is arguably the best black ops soldier in recent Marvel history, and Black Widow is coming along for the ride too… how can this NOT be awesome?!?
We here at Midtown are huge fans of Fables, and in March, us Fableites (Fablenatics?) and the greater public are getting a look at the history of the Fables Femmes, the Fairest. Characters like Snow White, Rapunzel, Rose Red, Sleeping Beauty and all of our other favorites are getting the spotlight. Bill Willingham and Phil Jimenez are working on the first arc, so you KNOW it’s going to be well written as well as gorgeously illustrated. More Fables? YES PLEASE!
9. BKV’s return to comics!
Brian K. Vaughn is one of the golden princes of comics, having written such groundbreaking series as Y The Last Man and Ex Machina, but he took to writing for Hollywood for a bit, and us comic fans were sad. Well weep no more, because BKV is bringing a new ongoing series to Image! Saga is being purported to be the amalgamation of a sci-fi space epic and a fantasy epic… a sci-fi space/fantasy epic! That is the best genre baby EVER! Of course, Brian K. would come up with such a terrific marriage of two things nerds love! Add Fiona Staples to the mix, and this could be the book of 2012!
8. POWERS ON FX!
Brian Michael Bendis is probably best known as the architect of the Ultimate Universe and the current Avengers, but the series that got him on the map in the first place, Powers, is coming to FX in 2012! Brian has been working on a TV series for Powers for years, and recently finished the pilot for the series! For those not in the know, Powers follows two homicide detectives (pictured above: Deena Pilgrim and Christian Walker) as they investigate and solve crimes involving people with superhuman abilities, the eponymous Powers. Expect Powers to show up on FX sometime in 2012!
7. The New DCU’s new menace!
While not an overt reveal, the DC All-Access page in every DC book recently revealed that the Daemonites (of WildC.A.T.S. fame) will become a major threat in the New DCU! For those not in the know, the Daemonites are reptilian aliens that have the ability to possess the body of another living creature and take on all of it’s hosts’ memories and abilities of the host. They’ve been showing up primarily in the Grifter series, but DC is saying they’ll be showing up in other books. While the Daemonites aren’t new, their incorporation into the New DCU brings a new wrinkle and lets us see a new menace for our heroes to battle!
6. Animal Man/Swamp Thing “Crossover”!
Scott Snyder and Jeff Lemire have done a clever, clever thing with their respective books: given them a common enemy. Both Animal Man and Swamp Thing are going to be fighting against the Rot, which seeks to end all life in it’s festering, degrading clutches! While both characters aren’t part of the same group, or the same book, both are united against the enemy. Sort of. They’re not necessarily “teaming-up”, but Snyder and Lemire have teased something like that. These two are arguably two of the best DC books of the New 52, and if you’re not already on board, then hop on RIGHT NOW!
5. X-Men and Avengers Collide!
X-Men. Versus. Avengers. Think about that. The World’s Greatest Super Heroes going up against the Children of the Atom. These are the most powerful beings on the planet, who fight to defend its people, and they’re going to gun for each other?!? It’s like Axel Alonso went back in time and asked 8 year old us what we wanted to see (Well, in my case, Darkhawk would ultimately unify everyone against the real enemy, and single handedly take down the Big Bad… what can I say?), and we’re sure we’re not alone in that assessment of X-Men vs. Avengers. It starts in March!
4. Walking Dead Returns!
Walking Dead has been one of the hottest shows on television, and it warms our nerdly hearts to see so many people embrace the show! The mid-season return is set for February and the show has definitely proven two things: No one is safe (check out that mid-season finale!) and don’t expect to know that many spoilers if you’ve read the comic (again, check out the mid-season finale!). Speaking of the comic, issue 100 also comes out this year, and with the revelations of the most recent issues, this could be a really good (bad) year for Rick Grimes and crew in TWO different mediums!
3. Doctor Who Series 7!
Okay, so this is an established TV property first, but I know plenty of people who love Dr. Who as well as comics! Show runner Stephen Moffat likes to cut a relentless pace with Dr. Who, meaning there’s a lot of action and a lot of bombastic-y… bombast. Last Season saw the Doctor meet a new enemy in the Silence. Without spoiling the last season, the initial mystery from the first episode was a doozy, and we’re eagerly looking forward to what Moffat and co. have in store for us in 2012! Doctor Who premieres in the fall of 2012.
2. Avengers Movie!
This movie was set into motion in 2008 with Iron Man. It’s continued to build momentum in Captain America, Iron Man 2, Incredible Hulk and Thor. All of those little scenes at the ends of those movies have been preparing us for this:
The boldest attempt at a comic book movie yet, The Avengers is a grand experiment. By introducing it’s component team members in their own movies, Marvel Studios has built incredible hype up leading to this movie. There’s A LOT riding on the success of this film, but I think Director Joss Whedon and the actors are capable of making a movie that completely blows all of our minds. Avengers hits theaters May 4th.
1. Dark Knight Rises!
As great as Avengers will be, there’s one character that’s established himself as a box office behemoth. A character that strikes fear in criminals with a growl that makes any bladder loosen. A character whose last movie is the highest grossing comic book film of all time (#10 overall) with over a BILLION DOLLARS worldwide. The man, the myth…
Even with all of that established, there’s more to add on to the anticipation. How about this being director Christopher Nolan’s last Batman film? How about Christian Bale, the best movie Batman to date (modulated voice aside), also making this his last Batfilm? How about that trailer? How about the possibility that this Dark Knight dies???
July 20th is too far away.
Well, that’s our list! If you have something to add onto that list, please feel free to leave comments! That’s all for now, enjoy the New Year and…
