Uncanny Avengers #1 kicks off Marvel Now! on October 10th just in time for New York Comic Con, and we’ve got a Midtown exclusive cover by J. Scott Campbell for that and All New X-Men #1, and Avengers #1.  All three covers connect to form one beautiful image depicting the lovely ladies of Marvel Now! We had the chance to speak to J. Scott Campbell about his work on the covers and get a sneak peak at the art in progress!

UPDATED! We know have the inked version of our All-New X-Men cover and the final version of the Uncanny Avengers cover!

When doing cover images with several characters, how do you choose which characters will be the focus of the image?

It varies, though, with team shots, I tend to default to what I grew up with, the Arthur Adams and the Jim Lees, those covers of my adolescence almost always featured all the characters equally prominently in some way, so I think that’s always in my subconscious. But it’s also a lot like arranging a family portrait, Little guys in front (Girls, Wolverine) Big guys in the back (Thor, Hulk!) Lol!

Do you enjoy drawing a particular type of character over another? If so, what kind and why?

Well, it’s no secret that I adore drawing the pretty heroines the most, but team shots of this nature are great! So many opposing shapes and sizes of characters with such a variety of different body language. It’s a challenge, but it’s fun choreographing everyone. It’s definitely a unique skill and not one every comic book artist enjoys or does well, but I like to do it.

What do you think makes for a strong cover image?

Hmmmm… tough question, it really depends. Some schools of thought say a single character/white background draws the eye. I mean, just look at any newsstand, I think there’s truth to that. But team books, they’re a different animal. It’s all about showcasing the character’s unique and individual looks and talent, while also injecting a high dose of exhilarating excitement, which is what I’ve done in this case.

Out of the three Midtown exlusive covers you’re doing now for All-New X-Men #1, Avengers #1, and Uncanny Avengers #1, which is your favorite?

Well, only time will tell, it’s all still so fresh, but at the moment, I’m leaning towards the Uncanny Avengers! I’m really satisfied with the starburst arrangement of the figures and it was a unique mix of characters I’ve only barely ever drawn before, so I liked that! But god help the regular artist on this book, these costumes are very ornate! Some of the most detailed I’ve ever drawn. I mean, have you guys taken a serious look at that new Cap design…?! Holy ****! Lol!

Who is your all-time favorite Marvel character?

Hmmmm…. Tough! Male: Spidey, hands down! Female: *siiiigggggh….* Far too many lovelies there to chose! ; )
