Batman comics The Dark Knight

BATMAN: YEAR ONE

Batman Year One Comic

Ladies and gentlemen, this is THE Batman origin story that you need to read! Written by Frank Miller and with art by David Mazzucchelli, this tale explores Bruce Wayne’s return to Gotham City and his earliest adventures as the Caped Crusader. As Wayne attempts to clean up his city, a police officer named James Gordon – you may have heard of him! – is transferred to Gotham. Just like Batman, Gordon sees just how corrupt the city has become and he’ll fight against the odds to make it a better place. Can Gotham truly be saved, though? Make sure this is the first Batman story you read! If it’s not the first, at least make sure you read it at some point, because this is essential reading for both Batman and James Gordon! After you read this, watch Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins again to spot a cinematic take on one of the comic’s unforgettable scenes!

THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS

The Dark Knight Returns

You’ve heard of a little upcoming movie called Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, right? Well, director Zack Snyder appears to be taking a lot of inspiration from Frank Miller’s iconic story, THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS. Regularly considered one of the top must-read comics of all-time, Miller’s story introduces an older, tougher version of Batman who comes to blows with Superman. The big brawl alone is worth reading, but what makes it so excellent is the political and moral commentary that’s sprinkled throughout the journey. Plus, Batman has a downright vicious fight with someone called the Mutant Leader – it’s a battle you’re never going to forget. Also involved is a horrifying version of the Joker, Two-Face, and several others. Promise us you’ll read this comic before buying a ticket to see Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, okay?

BATMAN: HUSH

Batman Hush comic

Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee’s BATMAN: HUSH is a tremendous amount of fun. Lee’s pencils are undeniably impressive, and Loeb’s story manages to incorporate so many Batman characters – both allies and villains – in such an entertaining way! For new readers, the story will serve as a great introduction to Batman’s world and then leave you wanting more. For everyone else, there’s plenty of fan service along the way as familiar face after familiar face manages to get involved in the mystery. Even if the big reveal doesn’t shock you, odds are you’ll be blown away by just how impressive Lee’s panels are! This one’s pure popcorn entertainment.

BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN

Batman The Long Halloween

Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s crime mystery is a gripping ride that’ll keep you guessing until the very end. This one throws you into the deep end of Gotham’s crime scene and throws in a wide selection of Batman characters along the way. Sale’s artwork will keep your eyes glued to the pages and Loeb’s story will keep you engaged the whole time. If you enjoy this one – and we’re confident you will – we strongly recommend reading BATMAN: DARK VICTORY afterwards! This is an experience that’s going to leave an impression on your mind and your eyes – it simply delivers on every level!

BATMAN: THE COURT OF OWLS

Batman comics Court of Owls

If you want to see why so many people can’t stop praising Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman run, this is the place to start! This opening story is rich in world-building; just when you thought you knew Gotham, Snyder reveals there’s still so much more mystery lurking in the crime-filled city! There’s a ton of exciting action along the way and the narrative is going to keep you hooked. Throw in Capullo’s consistently jaw-dropping artwork and it’s no surprise that people can’t stop recommending this title! Simply put, this one is epic.

Those are just a select few of the VERY many Batman collections that are worthy of your time, and we have a ton of other great Batman stories in our stores!
