Special Edition: NYC

The first year of Special Edition: NYC has finally come to an end, and boy, did we have fun! We ran into some old friends, and made some new ones as well. Our booth was located front and center in the Javits center, showcasing some of our Midtown exclusive variants, t-shirts, blank covers, and more! We checked out some great panels, interviewed some top creators, and even gave away free comics! Read about our complete coverage of the event below!

The doors for Special Edition: NYC opened bright and early on Saturday morning and our staff were prepared with exclusive variants, blank covers, Superman Red Son shirts, and more! We saw both new and familiar faces, and were happy to answer any (and all) comic book related questions. This was a no frills comic book convention, and we met some die hard fans who were excited to spend the day finding their favorite new releases, collecting rare back issues, meeting some big-name creators, and attending some great panels!

These two lucky guys even won free Midtown Exclusive Spider-Man Sketch Variants on Sunday!

Although the crowd wasn’t as big as New York Comic Con, there were still a ton of cosplayers in attendance, including Captain America (the dog!). Our very own Kassandra was on scene dressed as Wonder Woman and lifting kids in the air for photo ops! Now that’s dedication! We also sponsored an amazing Official Cosplay Afterparty on Saturday, and saw some of the coolest costumes from the day!

Just like New York Comic Con, Special Edition: NYC featured a number of exciting panels with some of the biggest creators in comics! We got to attend The Nerdist’s Comic Book Club-Live, The DC Comics-Batman 75th Anniversary, and the Marvel: 75 Years of Marvel panels.

The Nerdist’s Comic Book Club-Live

The Nerdist’s Comic Book Club – Live is a live talk show hosted by Pete LePage, Justin Tyler, and Alex Zalben.  This live podcast featured special guests Jordan D. White (editor at Marvel Comics) and Halle Kiefer (TruTV’s ‘Friends of People’). This episode also featured musical guests Michael Ragosta and Robert Ragosta of This Good Robot.

Throughout the hour long panel, they discussed their favorite new comics (The Woods, Rat Queens, Iron Fist, Southern Bastards), their predictions for Superman v Batman: Dawn of Justice (a legal drama?), and their advance reviews of “The Flash” and “Gotham” pilots. A question came up about the Gotham pilot, which was, “When does Gotham City suddenly turn into The OC?” Alex Zalben quickly answered this question by stating that, “halfway through the pilot, the Penguin punches Bruce Wayne is the face and says, “Welcome to the DC, b*tch!” ”

DC Comics – Batman 75th Anniversary

This panel covered all things Batman, with special guests Gail Simone, James Tynion IV, and Greg Pak! They discussed their current work on the Batman series, as well as their thoughts on past Batman movies (the Christopher Nolan trilogy was a favorite across the board). They also talked about the upcoming Batman Day and the fun items we can expect to see in stores!

Marvel: 75 Years of Marvel

This Marvel panel marked the 75th anniversary of Marvel Comics #1, and featured Peter David and Chris Claremont. They discussed their first involvement in Marvel Comics (Peter David’s parents didn’t let him read Marvel Comics when he was younger, because the cover images were too scary). They also talked about how many Marvel characters they have created over the years (Chris Claremont has created 703….in his last issue).

Lastly, they spoke about some of their favorite books to write (Peter David has been writing The Hulk for 12 years…and he’s never written back). In the end, Chris Claremont joked that was just happy to have someone speak more than him for once at a panel!

Overall, it was a very successful event. Everyone had a great time finding their favorite comics  (including all the happy fathers on Father’s Day!). We hope you had as much fun as we did, and we can’t wait to see you again next year!
