Grant Gustin The Flash

Article by Gregg Katzman

Back when it was announced that actor Grant Gustin landed the role of Barry Allen, a.k.a. the Flash, some fans were skeptical. Well, anyone who had negative thoughts about the casting decision has likely eaten their words by now. Gustin continues to prove he’s an awesome incarnation of the Scarlet Speedster and he makes all of the danger, drama, and fun – no matter how over-the-top it may be – seem believable. Seeing as today is the actor’s birthday, we wanted to remind fans that he’s doing an excellent job as the iconic DC hero. So, here are 3 simple reasons why we’re absolutely loving Grant Gustin as the Flash!

The Flash Season One spoilers ahead!

He can make us laugh and cheer

The Flash

The CW’s The Flash is a show that’s full of tragedy, and if danger isn’t already present, you can bet it’s right around the corner. Criminals and not-so-noble metahumans make life in Central City pretty scary, but despite all of the mayhem and loss, The Flash always remembers that balancing all of the darkness with some comedy and joy is important. Thanks to Gustin’s often charming and humanizing performance, it’s easy to relate to the guy – even if he is the fastest (good) man alive. He has great chemistry with the cast, so you can always count on some conversations between Barry and his friends – and even enemies – that’ll make you smile.

He can make us cry

Can you honestly tell us it didn’t break your heart when Barry finally had a chance to talk to his mother? Or any time he talked to his father from behind a window in jail? Or any time he had a heart-to-heart with detective Joe West? Or any time his hopes of being with Iris West were totally shattered? Gustin knows how to make us laugh out loud and cheer as he jokes around and races into action, but he sure knows how to tug at our heartstrings, too. The actor gave a consistently powerful performance throughout the show and we never stopped caring about him. Sure, we know he’s pretty safe since he’s the main character, but the emotional connection was there and that’s what truly matters. Just watch how Kevin Smith reacted to Allen’s devastating big moment in the Season One finale!

He’s clearly passionate about the role

Just like Stephen Amell (who plays Green Arrow), it’s obvious that Grant Gustin is beyond grateful for landing the role of the Flash. He regularly interacts with fans on social media, expresses excitement about the role and the way the show is constantly expanding, and he even dressed as classic Flash for Halloween (see above)! He seems like a legitimately good dude who isn’t taking this opportunity for granted or letting it get to his head, so that makes it so much easier to root for his character in the show.
