Article by John Quinones

Now that DC has established its cinematic universe with Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, and the upcoming Wonder Woman and Justice League, I wonder who else from the source material will be making an appearance in the cinematic universe and what stories would DC and Warner Bros. use. With Ben Affleck’s success as Batman I decided to cast some other heroes from Gotham that we might possibly see in ol’ Bat’s film future.  I decided to cast the Robins and propose some story lines that would be an awesome segue for the boy wonder.  Now I know what you must be thinking… NO!!!! Leave Robin out of the DCEU!  Didn’t you see what happened before?  Batman and Robin crash and burned the entire franchise!!

I know, which is why I am proposing to cast all the iterations of Robin and not try to combine Dick Grayson and Jason Todd into one character.  That being said, we know that the new take on Batman is after the death of Robin.  Although it’s not specified in the films I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that they at least got that right and the Robin in question is Jason Todd.  If that is the case, then Dick Grayson’s Robin has already come and gone from the Batcave and is now Nightwing.  So who do I think would be a good Dick Grayson?

My first choice would be… Ian Somerhalder

That’s right, the guy from the Vampire Diaries!  Not only is he talented, I think he can give Grayson that playfulness against Affleck’s stoic Batman.  He also bulked up and added 20-30 pounds of muscle to his frame and could easily have the look of an acrobat plus he is now 38 but still looks in his 20’s so he can be the more mature of the bunch.

Story lines I would use: A Knight in Bludhaven, The Black Mirror

For my next choice, Jason Todd is… Liam Hemsworth

Yup, the God of Thunder’s baby brother is who I would choose for the street smart and recently departed Jason Todd.  Why you ask? One: It would just be fun to have two brothers cast on opposite sides of the cinematic spectrum. Two: This would be completely off type for him which I think would be awesome to see.  Three: Judging from his physical prowess, you could believe that he could go toe to toe with Ben as the Red hood.

Story lines I would use: Detective Comics #560 The Batman Nobody Knows (to establish Jason Todd being left out and building animosity toward Batman: Reference), A Death in the Family (for reference) Batman #424 The Diplomat’s Son (shows Jason’s Anger issues and how he could lead to becoming Red Hood), Batman: Under the Red Hood

With Tim Drake we go with someone whose name has been thrown in the ring from for another comic book superhero, Spider-Man: Asa Butterfield

Why you ask? Tim Drake is incredibly intelligent character who deduced Batman’s identity at the age of 9.  After Asa’s portrayal in Ender’s Game I think he can bring the perfect balance of intensity and intelligence to the role.

Story lines I would use: Robin a Hero Reborn, Robin II Jokers wild

And now for the prodigal son Damian Wayne: My choice is none other than Jacob Tremblay.

After his performance in Room with Oscar Winner Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) he has nowhere to go but up!  I think he can bring a gravitas to the role of Damian Wayne without being as annoying as Jake Lloyd in Phantom Menance. He is also the perfect age and can continue to grow with this franchise!

Story lines I would use: Batman Son of the Demon (Origin), Batman & Son (introduction), Batman and Robin Born to Kill, Batman Inc.

And just to be fair…

Here are my casting picks for Batgirl and Batwoman respectively…

For Barbara Gordon… none other than Adrianne Palicki

She is no stranger to the superhero genre, from Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Wonder Woman Pilot, to G.I. Joe: Retaliation and John Wick we know she can handle herself with the best of them!  Not to mention she can act and brings the beauty, and intelligence needed for Babs.

Story lines I would use: the current Batgirl Rebirth line

Lastly, for Batwoman I needed to find someone who has the same presence as Ben Affleck and can hold her own as his cousin and equal.  Someone who has onscreen fighting ability who possibly played a superhero before and who can be convincing in any role she attempts. I give you…

Charlize Theron ( I mean really, try to argue with me on this one)

Story line I would use: the current Detective comics run

Now, while you may not agree with my casting notes, you must admit I now have you thinking about who could play these characters and the story lines you can imagine fitting into the cinematic universe.  I’ll leave you with this final note, can you imagine an R rated feature adaptation of “Death of the Family”with the current cast and these suggestions? I can!

Feel free to voice your opinion on who you think should be cast and what other characters you would like to see on the big screen!
