Marvel Netflix and Daredevil: Born Again SPOILERS are ahead! Obviously, the following article is 100% speculation.

Article by Gregg Katzman

I remember the very first time I saw Marvel’s The AvengersWatching Earth’s Mightiest Heroes unite to take on an alien invasion brought me a ridiculous amount of joy. Immediately, I felt like a five year-old kid watching cartoons – it was that level of fun. Now, Marvel and Netflix are hoping to capture that kind of magic on the small screen with Marvel’s The Defenders.

Daredevil. Jessica Jones. Iron Fist. Luke Cage. (And maaaaaaaaybe a cameo from the Punisher?) It won’t be very long until we see these heroes interact and fight a common threat. Will I get goosebumps all over again when I see these characters join forces? Considering how excellent Marvel and Netflix’s shows have been, the answer will very likely be “yes”. But what will make them unite? What could make the Man Without Fear need some help in his ongoing struggle to clean up Hell’s Kitchen? The Kingpin forming an alliance with The Hand, that’s what! For a show this big (which presumably has Daredevil in a key role), I think they should draw inspiration from a big comic: Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s Daredevil: Born Again. If you haven’t read it, you really should fix that asap. (While you’re at it, here are five other reading suggestions.)

In the show, Karen Page finally knows that Matt Murdock is Daredevil, and Wilson Fisk now wants to make Matt Murdock suffer. Meanwhile, the Hand needs a leader, and if they don’t already know that Matt Murdock is Daredevil, they definitely have the means to find out. And, to top it all off, Frank Simpson has become more like his comic counter-part: Nuke (which would loop in that organization from Jessica Jones). All of these elements spell potentially HUGE trouble for Daredevil and New York, which is where the other heroes happen to live. So they may not know it yet, but these are their problems, too.

With both Matt Murdock AND Daredevil being in danger, it’s understandable that the tough and sometimes stubborn guy could finally admit that he needs some help. Who could he turn to, though? Night Nurse! So far, she has been the link between these franchises, and if Matt hears rumblings about other heroes in the city, he’ll turn to her for info. Night Nurse could definitely set up a meeting between Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones. It’s just a matter of time to see how Iron Fist would be connected to all of this, but that really shouldn’t be too difficult to accomplish if he’s friends with Luke or will meet Night Nurse like everyone else did.

Obviously, the show wouldn’t be a direct adaptation – these things so very rarely are. For example, Karen Page is in a completely different place, and she could unknowingly reveal Daredevil’s true identity instead of selling it. Would it be cool to see Iron Man and Captain America swoop in during the end of the big conflict like they did in the comic? Absolutely, but it seems far more likely that Daredevil’s newfound allies would be the ones who have his back in a big brawl, and understandably so. There would be countless changes, but what would matter is that the basic inspiration is there, and I firmly believe that the premise – Kingpin aligns with the Hand as he goes after Matt and Daredevil, causing the vigilante to seek out help – is absolutely doable and has the potential to be all kinds of awesome. Plus, more Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk is always a good thing, especially if Marvel’s The Defenders paves the way for a conflict involving him, Daredevil, Bullseye, and *Elektra in Daredevil Season 3…

*A conflict that doesn’t end with Elektra dying (again), that is!
