Faith

Article by Gregg Katzman

Over in Valiant’s Harbinger series (and the big event Harbinger Wars), the publisher has put its team of psiots – people with special abilities – through a lot of craziness. They’ve been in giant, explosive conflicts, they’ve had their emotions put to the test, and they’ve suffered a loss. These dramatic experiences would be enough to change anyone, but Faith – a psiot who can use telekinesis to fly and create a “companion field” – remains uplifting and lighthearted. Now, she has a great reason to be even happier: she’s the star of her very own limited series. That’s a huge deal for a fangirl like herself!

The new comic – by Jody Houser, Francis Portela, Marguerite Sauvage, and Andrew Dalhouse – goes on sale January 27th (a link to order can be found below), but we’ve already read the debut issue (Valiant’s nice like that). Guess what? We love it, and we hope you do, too! In case you’re not already excited for Valiant’s new series, here are three reasons why you should be!

An order of fun with a side of mystery

Faith

First and foremost, Faith is a really joyous book – it’s just overflowing with happiness. Even though Faith is such a cheery and positive person, she’s surrounded by a pretty messed up world; readers of Harbinger certainly know what I’m talking about. All of that twisted stuff doesn’t bring her down, though. Faith’s still every bit as warm and funny as you expect her to be and thankfully, that lovable personality is present for a vast majority of the first issue. But the book has a bigger pitch than just “comic book fans can relate to Faith.” There’s of course something villainous going on, and this first issue is going to leave you asking a lot of questions. The cliffhanger looks like it’ll probably have a predictable follow-up which involves Faith’s powers (I’ll happily eat my words if I’m wrong!), but this issue is still oozing with intrigue. We’ve seen Faith act heroically with her team, and now it’s time to witness how she acts when she’s fighting evil all by herself. Luckily for her, she has no problem flying solo. Boom! Pun!

One of us! One of us!

Faith

Faith’s a fangirl. She loves comics. She loves various popular sci-fi and fantasy franchises. Honestly, I imagine it takes a lot to really dislike the character. Her spirit is infectious and her passions are relatable; she’s essentially one of us if we were to randomly get abilities. If you didn’t already know and love Faith, the odds are pretty good that you’ll be rooting for her after this issue. Her personality is by far the biggest selling point of this book. The art’s a delight and the supporting characters are amusing, but Faith’s disposition is more than likely what’ll leave an impression and motivate you to pick up the next issue.

New reader friendly

Faith Valiant

Do you have no idea who Faith is? Have you never read any of the Harbinger comics? Have you never even read any Valaint comics before (we’ll do our best to forgive you for that)? No problem! Obviously, someone who’s read Valiant since it rebooted will have a better appreciation for Faith’s world, but writer Jody Houser makes sure this debut comic can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. Thanks to a quick intro page and some scattered exposition, this is a story that can inform new readers – and hopefully motivate them to get the other Valiant comics – while also entertaining existing fans. This comic is good fun, people, so give it a shot! Unless you’re a really grumpy person with a cold heart. If so, this book probably isn’t for you. For everyone else, get ready to smile!
