Midtown Bloggerinos! Raph here, this time to take a look at something that some of us are looking forward to… no it’s not AvX, but it’s something that fantasy fans can appreciate: Game of Thrones!

The show is based on the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin. It’s a medieval fantasy epic that’s supposed to span seven books, with five having been released. HBO aired the first season last April. The show picked up momentum towards the end of the season, and it’s become a phenomenal success.

The series follows the people of the land of Westeros, the Lords of certain lands and the bonds that connect them. Seven Kingdoms are ruled by one King, but since Robert Baratheon usurped the Targaryen dynasty, a web of intrigue has woven itself around the Iron Throne (the king’s throne is made up of swords melted together into a chair, supposedly by Aegon Targaryen’s dragons). Baratheon asks his best friend Eddard (Ned) Stark to become the Hand of the King, and keep an eye out for any trouble, as the previous Hand has died. Meanwhile, in Essos, the Eastern lands across the Narrow Sea, the last Targaryen, Daenarys, tries to get home, with an army at her back, and reclaim the Iron Throne.

The thing about the series, or at least the first book/season is that it’s very slow to build up the fantasy elements. The fantastical stuff, like dragons and magic, initially is mentioned as myth or buried in the past. So what draws people in? The intrigue.

The plots and scheming and conniving of the people we meet that want the Iron Throne (Ned Stark is too honorable for that), draws you in. Each character’s story is equally compelling. No one really gets the short end of the stick, particularly on the show. The Lannisters, Starks and Targaryens get plenty of screen time.

Game of Thrones season 2 starts Sunday, April 1st on HBO, and we have season 1 on Blu-Ray and DVD.  We’ve got lots of collectibles, and all of the comics and graphic novels by Dynamite Entertainment right here, and all the books here!

Until next time—
